Huiying B. Chan is a visionary poet, creative writer, cultural organizer, and anti-racist facilitator from Lenapehoking (NYC). Their work centers intergenerational and ancestral resilience, love, and liberation. By day they work as an organizer for education justice; after hours, they facilitate creative writing workshops to activate our radical imaginations. Huiying has received writing fellowships and residencies nationally, including the 2020 Kundiman Mentorship Lab Fellowship in Poetry, 2019 Poetry Incubator Fellowship from The Poetry Foundation & Crescendo Literary, 2018 Asian American Writers’ Workshop Open City Fellowship, and attended VONA/ Voices to study memoir with Elmaz Abinader. Huiying also received the 2018 Kairos Fellowship to organize for racial and immigration justice nationally. In 2016-2017, they were awarded the Knafel Fellowship to travel to Chinatowns in eight countries around the world, using oral histories and poetry to document stories of migration and resilience across the diaspora. Huiying holds a B.A. in Ethnic Studies and Education from Wellesley College where they were the first to graduate with an Ethnic Studies major since the college’s inception. They are currently working on their first poetry manuscript, Ancestors, which explores matrilineal legacies, self-remembrance, and reclaiming unwritten queer and trans lineages.
